Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

Royal Victoria Hospital

Project: UPS requirements for Royal Victoria, Belfast City and The Mater Hospitals Belfast
Client: Belfast Health and Social Care Trust
Timescale: 2 months

The critical nature of the day to day running of the hospitals requires reliable and trusted UPS systems. The Trust issued the tender requirement to ensure back-up power for each data centre in the Royal Victoria Hospital and Belfast City Hospital as well as for the ICU and Theatres in the Mater Hospital, Belfast

Our solution

Following site surveys and several meetings with the hospitals’ estates operations teams and the electrical sub-contractors we designed the most appropriate and economical solutions for each hospital. This included  2x 120 kVA systems for each data centre in the Royal Victoria Hospital and 2 x 120 kVA for the data centre in the Belfast City Hospital plus 2 x 250Amp (STS)Static Transfers Switches. For the Mater Hospital we supplied 3 x 30kVa UPS to ensure backup for the ICU and Theatres.

The MGE galaxy series was chosen as the system to install in all hospital sites. The reputation and quality of this brand leader was imperative to the hospital as no chances can be taken with non-branded or perhaps cheaper alternatives.

Our experienced Field Service Engineers installed and commissioned each UPS to the required OEM standard and ensured the safe handover including on-site training to the hospital estate management team.

Alison McFadden (Director Continu Ltd) commented;

“It is true to say that IT underpins everything that the Trust does and has an increasing impact on improving patient welfare. IT is critical to the delivery of effective healthcare and as such the trust deliberately chose reliable and trustworthy brands , MGE (UPS) by Schneider Electric, for their backup power requirements. Continu ltd were responsible for the implementation of the project and the Trust’s confidence in them was rewarded when the project was completed competently, on time and within budget.”
